GS1 Sunrise 2027: Are you ready!

GS1 Sunrise 2027 is an initiative to transition global product identification from traditional 1D barcodes (like UPCs) to more versatile 2D barcodes (like QR codes and Data Matrix) by the end of 2027. This shift will enable more information to be stored on packaging, improving supply chain traceability, consumer engagement, and the ability for frontline workers to access data. During the transition, products will likely display both 1D and 2D barcodes to ensure compatibility with older point-of-sale systems.

What this means for businesses

  1. Update scanning hardware and software: Businesses need to ensure their scanners and systems can process 2D barcodes, not just 1D ones.
  2. Adopt dual-marking: During the transition period, packaging will feature both the traditional 1D barcode and the new 2D barcode.
  3. Enhance data management: Businesses must prepare to store and manage the larger amounts of data that 2D barcodes can hold.
  4. Integrate systems: Cross-functional teams, including IT, packaging, and marketing, need to collaborate on label design and data strategy.

Benefits of the new system

  1. Increased consumer engagement: A single scan with a smartphone can provide customers with detailed product information, such as nutritional data, allergen details, and sourcing information.
  2. Improved supply chain management: The enhanced data can improve inventory accuracy, management, and recall readiness.
  3. Greater product authentication: 2D codes help combat counterfeit products by allowing for more robust authentication
  4. Better frontline worker experience: It provides a way for workers to access real-time data with mobile devices, which can improve efficiency and reduce errors.
